The staff and volunteers extend best wishes to the following Associate Teachers as they depart Sandhills Children’s Center after providing years of service to children and families:

PARENT MESSAGE

A message from Anne and Joseph, Joanna’s parents:   

Joanna is a happy two-year old who has benefited from the services provided by the Children’s Center.  She had her first therapy session through the home-based Outreach Program and now attends the campus in Southern Pines. 

The Center has been supportive of our family through the challenging times of Joanna’s development.   In her first few months of life, she had difficulty in breathing and was soon diagnosed with a large heart murmur, called pulmonary hyperplasia.  After completing genetic testing this past summer, it was determined that Joanna has a rare genetic disorder called Kleefstra Syndrome, which is characterized by global developmental delays, low muscle tone, a heart condition, and a recognizable facial appearance. 

Two months prior to her second birthday, Joanna had surgery to repair her heart.  Almost immediately afterwards, we and her therapists noticed improvements in her motor development.  In addition to her classroom instruction, Joanna receives speech, physical, and occupational therapies.   Joanna now sits independently, crawls, and is able to stand when holding on to something.  She also babbles, drinks from a sippy cup and feeds herself with the use of a scoop spoon.

She is a joy to have and we thank God every day for her being with us.”
